well, it's been a big day for the wee dog. He has had his Orthoscopy for his luxating patella, and the boy bits removed. The bad news is that he may need the other stifle doing sometime as the groove in that stifle is also very shallow. Once he comes home tomorrow, it is going to be a challenge keeping a 'Tigger' type chap quiet! I have invested in a ridiculous array of Kong toys, so please wish me luck! Any further suggestions in limiting the exuberance in a 1yr old lad is very welcome.

WCS are naturally exuberant, why limit it, it's part of the fun? Hope he gets over his surgery, personally I'd have left his boy bits on unless there was a sound medical reason not to.

The first couple of days are the worst . Alfie didn't put his leg down at all and he looked so miserable. The toilet carry on is the worst, but you'll be amazed how quickly they find away with a little help . We put a long thin towel under his tummy to support his weight ,when he walked ( like a strap )for the first couple of days . A bit of a perfofmance but it seemed to help him . He also didn't poo until the 5th day post op ! I am sure Jura will make a speedy recovery just like Alfie did . They are young and bounce back alot quicker than you think . As for the cage rest and confinement I think they do need peace and quiet for a while but later I just put Alfie on his lead in the house and if I was sitting just tied it to the chair and he was fine. But not easy with 2 other dogs charging about !! Good luck and message any time if I can help . Audrey

Hope he feels better soon. I find stuffing kongs with frozen yoghurt and rice pudding and then freezing them makes them last for a good while longer, my boys love them and it keeps them quiet for a lot longer. (if you do plug the end or it leaks and wrap in cling flim)

Well, here we are a few days in and all is going well. He is weight bearing, negotiating all sorts with the buster collar and in great spirits! Neill, I don't want to quash the exuberance, I love it, but I just need a way of adapting it for the incarceration of cage rest for 10 days! The worst bit for him is when he gets a normal bog standard itch and can't scratch it. He really is amazing though, I am so proud of my wee chap, the tail always wags no matter what.

Don't know why people remove boy bits unless its for medical reasons - appears to be flavour of the month. Pain of 2 operations at the same time, a bit rough!. Hope he gets over his ops without too much discomfort.

So glad to hear that Jura is doing well. A great relief for you ! It's so good to see that tail wagging ! I hope he has a speedy recovery. I hid tiny treats right beside Alfie , but in difficuilt to reach places and that kept him occupied for a while. Good luck !

Four weeks on and ...... what operation? Jura is doing very well and discharged from the vet today... after he leapt from the floor onto the exam table! The wound has healed - still a bit lumpy where the subcutaneous sutures are knotted, but looking good.

So glad to hear that Jura is doing so well. Did they manage to deepen the groove in the bone via keyhole surgery ? Did he not need his ligament moved ? Alfie is continuing to improve after his setback and is still going for hydrotherapy.

Audrey, they deepened the groove, but he has a 3 inch wound. The ligament had to be stitched into the new position but is holding well. The vet is very pleased with progress and we keep fingers crossed that the other leg doesn't need to be done. It is stable at the moment, but he was able to pop the patella out under anaesthetic, so it could eventually become a problem. Glad to hear Alfie is improving - had the patella come out again?

Alfie's ligament had to be cut and re-attached to the other side to realign the joint. Alfie had just overdone it when he came off the lead and caused the whole joint to become sore and inflamed. The surgeon should have said 12 weeks rest I think ! He is improving now and I have him off lead in the garden. He goes for hydrotherapy x2 a week , in a tank filled with water up to his tummy, on a treadmill. This is to help extend his leg and build up muscle. He's such a great dog and seems not to mind it at all ! As for his other leg ....... well..... the knee cap can be pushed out by the vet easily which is not good news. He has never had any problems with it as yet so we will leave well alone. What surgeon did Jura's op ? Did they mention to you the injections that dogs should get after joint surgery to prevent arthritis in the future. I was told that he should have yearly 4 day injections to prevent arthritis . Alfie is due to get his next month . Good luck with Jura keep up the good work !
