Any recommendations for general eyedrops? Something to use after a day of hunting in dry dusty scrub and barley stubble?

If this was my dog, and his built in eye drops (tear glands) were not having the desired effect I'd take him off to the vet.

I'm sure there is a dog equivalent of Optrex, but I'd seek professional advice first.

They do have the desired affect, but I would like to speed up and help the process if possible.

NO NEED TO TAKE THE DOG OR DOGS TO THE VET  SVENK,MYSELF AND MANY OTHER FRIENDS USE AN EYEDROP FROM BOOTS CALLED GOLDENEYE, IT  IS A MILD EYEDROP THAT CLEANS THE EYE AND TREATS MINOR EYE INFECTIONS,GET THE DROPS THERE EASY TO USE,WE HAVE BEEN USING IT ON OUR WORKING COCKERS FOR YEARS ,I ALSO NO MANY TERRIER LADS THAT USE IT ON THERE TERRIERS AFTER WORK.....ALSO USE  A VETERINARY EYE FORMULA WITH A MILD SOOTHING ANTIBACTERIAL ACTION AVAILABLE ONLINE   FROM HYPERDRUG,..BOTH THESE ARE UNDER A   £5   MUCH CHEAPER THAN GOING TO A VETS AND PAYING OVER THE ODDS FOR SAME EYE SOLUTION...U NO WHATS ITS LIKE WHEN THE DOGS DONE A DAYS WORK ESPECIALLY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR IN ANY TYPE OF COVER ,DRY HEATHER,NETTLES BRAMBLES ETC,    IT DOES THE TRICK

Whilst I to am no fan of vets bills, I'm afraid I totally disagree with you Geoff.  Your dogs have one pair of eyes, they need proper qualified care, even if that is only an initial consultation followed by use of a non-prescription remedy.

I use Lubrithal.

Lubrithal Eye Gel is a carbomer lubricating fluid to aid in moisturising and maintaining the tear layer of the eye.

Most eye lubricators such as just add moisture to the cornea, however, Lubrithal is a carbomer moisturiser and as such retains moisture in the tear film for far longer.

Unlike hypromellose or Viscotears this product does not require a pharmacist to dispense nor a prescription from your vet. Lubrithal is a veterinary product which can be bought at any time. It comes in a 10gm tube.and is readily available online. It is about £6.50 and lasts ages. Great for dogs that have had a hard days beating!

Useful info Jaquie, thanks.

Geoff, I do work my dog and can't say I've experienced the problem you describe.  I err on the side of caution and am entitled to have a differing view to yours, each to their own.
