The very handsome Rufus is also at Caesar

http://www.caessr.org.uk/dogs-needing-homes.html

Rufus is a 2½ year old Red and White working type Cocker Spaniel, who has quite a dominant personality. He is good with other dogs and has lived with children. He has not lived with, or met cats. He travels well in the car. Rufus pulls on the lead and can suffer with selective deafness, if off lead, but will usually come back if he knows that you have a treat for him. He likes to run off with items - his favourite being socks. He does understand leave and will normally swap for a treat unless its a sock! His owner has been nipped a couple of times, when trying to remove socks from his mouth. Rufus has spent some time with our gundog trainer to help with his dominance and he is now ready to be rehomed.

The link will take you to a photo of him - he is very handsome :)

He is handsome.

I hope he soon finds a suitable home where he can continue with some training. :)

It always makes me so sad to see dogs up for rehoming. If I had the space and the money I would take them all!

I've not heard of Ceassr before, and they seem fairly honest with their descriptions. But I always wonder how come so many of the dogs have problems - pulling, noisy, chasing, nipping ( I call it biting), dominance etc. While it's difficult to train a dog to trial standard, it's not at all difficultl to at least get a dog to walk nicely, not chase the cat, and not bite the kids. And as for not wanting to get off the sofa....

I guess one must also feel sorry for some of the previous owners, as it can't be very nice to be frightened of your own dog, or have to give it up because they can't cope or are ill.

Ha, must be getting soft in my old age.

Svenk I couldn't agree more,,,,,,it's truely a sad situation. The amount of unwanted dogs is heart breaking really.

I've always loved dogs since I was a small kid and have always felt a deep responsbilty for the ones I've had.

Iike a child, they are in our stewardship and it's up to us.

I put alot/most of it down to people.

Rufus is a beautiful dog and only wish I could give him a home.  I would have absolutely no fear of being able to sort out the problems he currently has.  Just like children, dogs need security and love and a constant line of what is and what isn't acceptable and I have always found that to produce great results.

As you said Mike - I too put most, if not all of it, down to the owners.  And Svenk - there's nothing wrong with getting soft in your old age - it's what makes us human!

We looked at this site and it is heartbreaking, older dog's that have been part of a family for a long time up for re homing because a baby is coming along,it's so sad. we were going to post a couple of day's ago to see how picky people are when selecting home's for their pup's as we are being very picky and thought maybe we were going over the top,but after seeing the Caessr site Im glad we do what we do and only select the very best homes we can for our pup's,they are our responsibility and we would alway's take one of our pup's back if it needed re homing, maybe if all breeder's had to do this it would stop a lot of breeding.

This sort of comes ful circle back to the issue with breeding.

It is extremely rare for a dog (most breeds) to be born with the inclination to bite.  The majority of cases are down to the fact that the owners do not understand the dog and inadvertently bring these behaviours about, due to their lack of knowledge.

As breeders, we are tasked with vetting and obtaining as much information about prospective puppy owners, as we can.  This often involves just talking and ascertaining from what they say, whether we believe they are going to be the best owner of he puppy.

When forming this relationship, it allows the new owners to feel confortable enough with you to approach you as soon as a potential problem occurs, which can then be nipped in the bud before they become an issue.

It is much easier to stop problems, than try and correct them once they become an ingrained behaviour.

I would have thought that if the only time Rufus is nipping is when the previous owner tried to remove socks from his mouth, the obvious solution would be not to give him access to socks!

My two girls love to run off with things but I make sure that it is things they are allowed to have in the first place.

I find it very endearing that when I come home they both have to 'present' me with a gift  (I leave 2 items out for that very purpose).

It makes me so sad that owners are not willing to solve any problems that they have with their dogs.  It is much easier to get rid   :(
